Jorge Lorenzo celebrates his fifth victory of the campaign

The Spaniard, bidding for a third title, led throughout with a faultless ride, pulling clear of defending champion Marc Marquez while Valentino Rossi, who had started the race as the series leader, had to settle for a distant third.

Lorenzo said: “This was a very important race for the championship, I now lead from Valentino and it is also more difficult for Marc to recover and pull back more points. The tyre choice was good, felt better and I was able to open the gap at the start and then little by little open a bigger lead.

“But then it was difficult as the bike was sliding a little in traction so it needed care with the throttle, though at the end I did not need to push. I could have been a little faster then but didn’t need it as I had pushed so hard at the start to keep ahead of Marc.”Â

Lorenzo and Rossi are level on 211 points, but Lorenzo has two more victories this term and that give him the edge while Repsol Honda’s Marquez is third in the rankings but a massive 52 points down with seven races remaining.

Bradley Smith rode strongly into seventh on his Tech3 Yamaha, five places up on Scott Redding but Cal Crutchlow crashed out of 10th at three quarters distance.
